Mar Chiquita is a coastal lagoon sitting roughly 30 kilometres north of Mar del Plata in Buenos Aires province. The water here is fresh to brackish — calm, flat, and shallow — with the kite area centred on the east-facing lagoon mouth, where the predominant south wind arrives at a workable side-onshore angle. The approach from Mar del Plata is a short drive north along the coast. Once you're at the lagoon, getting to the water is uncomplicated; the launch area is open and easy to navigate. The wind picture is built around a strong southerly preference, sitting around 180 degrees and typically blowing 15 to 25 knots when conditions are on. The usable wind arc spans from 40 to 200 degrees, giving you a solid range of directions that work at this spot. At the lagoon mouth, that southerly comes in side-onshore — about as clean a wind angle as you can ask for — and delivers consistent pressure without the gustiness you'd associate with more exposed beach breaks. The water itself is the main event. No waves, no swell, no shore break — just flat, shallow lagoon. For learning or for polishing freestyle moves, this is an excellent canvas. If you're just starting out, the combination of shallow water, no surf, and qualified instruction is hard to beat. Intermediate riders will find it equally rewarding for working on technique without having to manage swell. The summer months of January and February are peak season. Expect more riders on the water and more beach traffic during this window — it's a popular spot with the local kite community and visiting riders from Mar del Plata. Outside these months it tends to be quieter, though conditions are most reliably consistent during summer. On the facilities front, Barlovento restaurant is at the spot, so post-session food is taken care of. The kite school also handles gear hire for those arriving without their own equipment. A few things to keep in mind: this is a lagoon, not the open ocean. Fresh to brackish water gives you slightly less buoyancy than you might be used to at saltwater spots. The shallow depth is a clear safety advantage for riders building confidence, but it does mean occasional bottom contact in some sections — footwear is worth considering. The sheltered nature of the lagoon generally keeps conditions cleaner than many open-coast spots in the region.
