About Bellerive Beach

Bellerive Beach sits on the eastern shore of the Derwent River in Hobart, looking directly across the water at the city's CBD. It's not a big-wave ocean spot — this is an estuary beach with sheltered, relatively flat water, which makes it accessible for riders who are building skills or want a clean session without fighting swell. Getting here is straightforward. Bellerive is on Hobart's Eastern Shore, a short drive from the city centre, with parking available along the foreshore. The beach is a sandy strip backed by a grassy foreshore — enough space to rig away from foot traffic, though the area gets busier on weekends and warmer days. The primary wind driver is the Derwent Valley thermal, a NW to W flow funnelled down from the ranges behind Hobart, typically running between 260–320°. These thermals build through the day and can deliver steady 12–20 knot sessions. The usable kite window runs from 215° to 345°, so a SW swing from the Roaring Forties will also fire things up — that direction tends to be punchier and less predictable than the smoother valley thermal, so size accordingly. The flat estuary water is forgiving, which is why this spot suits beginners and intermediates. That said, the Derwent is a working waterway. Ferries and recreational boats share the water, particularly on weekends — keep clear of the navigation channel and stay switched on. One firm safety note: there is a kite exclusion zone near 7 Mile Beach and Hobart Airport. Do not launch or fly kites in that restricted area. Check local boundaries before you rig. Facilities are solid for a foreshore spot. Abundance on the Quay is roughly 200 metres from the beach — the closest stop for a coffee or bite after your session. Bellerive Sushi Bar and Annapurna Bellerive are both within 300 metres. Cugini, Bay Bellerive, and Cocomo and Co are also a short walk. For accommodation, Beachview Bellerive is close to the beach, with Bella Vista on Beach and Beach House Bellerive Hobart Eastern Shore as further options along the eastern shore. Bellerive is a well-positioned urban kite spot — reliable valley thermals, flat water, and Hobart's full amenities right across the river.
