About Coronation Beach

Coronation Beach sits on Western Australia's mid-coast, a long stretch of wide open sand roughly 25 kilometres north of Geraldton. It's a genuinely remote spot — no coffee shop at the car park, no hire shops on the dune — but that's exactly why it works so well for kiting. The beach faces due west, which aligns it perfectly with the Fremantle Doctor, the reliable W-SW sea breeze that defines summer sailing and kiting along this coast. The approach means Geraldton is your last stop for supplies, fuel, and accommodation before heading out. Once you arrive, you'll find a wide, firm sandy beach that stretches far enough in both directions that crowd pressure is rarely a concern. The launch is clean. No rocks, no jetty pylons, no awkward ramps — just wide, flat sand with plenty of room to rig and walk your kite to the water. The Fremantle Doctor comes in from 215–235°, hitting this west-facing beach side-onshore. That's a forgiving angle: if something goes wrong, the wind carries you towards shore rather than out to sea, which makes it more manageable for riders still building experience. At 20–35 knots, this is real wind — not a light-air holiday destination. On the stronger end, the Doctor kicks up genuine chop with some wave potential, and riders comfortable in powered conditions will find it rewarding. On moderate days, it opens up nicely for intermediates working on upwind riding and transitions. Because it's side-onshore with consistent pressure, the water reads predictably. You're unlikely to encounter the kind of surprising lulls or shifts that catch you mid-manoeuvre. That consistency, combined with the uncrowded beach and wide sandy launch, makes Coronation one of the more honest all-levels spots on this stretch of coast — provided you're not put off by the remote setting and have appropriate gear for the conditions. Wind blows here year-round. The usable kite window spans 190–350°, so southerly swings and northerly shifts both fall within the flyable arc when conditions rotate beyond the core Doctor direction. For food and accommodation, Geraldton is your base. The town covers the basics well: AJ's Beach Cafe, Hog's Breath Cafe, Geraldton Turkish Kitchen, Casa Dolce, and Banh Mi Up for meals; Beached Barrel, Cafe Fleur, and Dôme for coffee and drinks. For a bed, Geraldton Backpackers and the Geraldton Self Contained Free Camp (24-hour limit) keep costs down. Pack everything you need before you head out — Coronation Beach itself has no services on site.
