About Melville Water

Melville Water sits in the protected Swan River estuary at East Fremantle, roughly 15 kilometres south of Perth's CBD. It's a large, shallow bay with a long narrow beach — the kind of setup that rewards methodical riders and punishes impulsive ones. Getting here is straightforward — the spot sits well within Perth's southern suburbs, accessible through the Melville area. The bay is sheltered by the surrounding estuary geography, which explains the flatwater character even when the Fremantle Doctor is pumping hard. That Doctor is the story. From October through April, a reliable southwesterly thermal tracks between roughly 200–240 degrees and typically delivers 15–25 knots. It arrives cross-to-onshore at Melville Water, which keeps the launch clean and puts the usable kite window between 220° and due north. This is Perth's defining summer wind, and the estuary channels it predictably enough that locals treat it almost like a schedule — if the heat is inland, the Doctor shows up. The water character is the spot's biggest asset.
