Safety Bay's "The Pond" sits about 45 kilometres south of Perth in Rockingham, and its reputation travels well beyond Western Australia. This is an enclosed lagoon shielded from the open ocean by a sand dune peninsula roughly two metres high — enough to kill the chop and deliver mirror-flat water that you'd struggle to find at any open coastal spot. On a good afternoon, the surface looks like polished glass. The Fremantle Doctor does the heavy lifting here. The SW-SSW sea breeze — coming in from roughly 190–225° — fires up every afternoon from around 2 pm between October and April, typically running in the 20–30 knot range. That kind of afternoon reliability, day after day through summer, is what turned The Pond into an internationally recognised competition venue. When you're standing on the foreshore watching riders work the flat water, you'll quickly understand why people make dedicated trips here from across Australia and beyond. The usable wind arc runs 145°–275°, which captures the full breadth of the sea breeze. Because the water is so sheltered and the breeze is thermally driven, conditions here are effectively tide-independent — no need to cross-reference tide tables before you rig up. What you see is what you get. That said, The Pond is not somewhere you bring a learner. The enclosed riding area, competition history, and busy afternoon crowd of experienced kiters all demand that you arrive knowing what you're doing. If you're still working on water-starts or you're not comfortable managing your drift in traffic, this is the wrong spot. This place rewards precise, self-sufficient riders. Before you launch, spend a few minutes watching the flow — understand where riders are going, where the lines are, and then commit with confidence. The beach launch on the lagoon side is sheltered from shore break, making entry and exit straightforward. But the compact nature of the riding area means right-of-way awareness is non-negotiable. For tuition, WA Surf operates locally. If The Pond is a goal and you're not quite there yet, they're the right first call. Food and coffee options are within reach: The Pond Barista for a pre-session coffee, Boat Ramp Cafe or Pengo's for something easy between sessions, and Bayside Pizza, The Bent Chip, or Virasat Indian Restaurant when you want a proper feed after.
