About Bimini Flats

Bimini Flats sits at the northern tip of North Bimini in the Bahamas, roughly 85 kilometres east of Miami across the Gulf Stream. From a distance it looks deceptively simple — a stretch of ultra-shallow white-sand flats under a wide open sky — but the combination of trade wind consistency, crystal-clear water, and legendary downwind runs has made this one of the Caribbean's most talked-about kite destinations. Getting here requires planning. North Bimini is a small island with no road connection to the mainland, so you're arriving by ferry or light aircraft from the Miami area. Factor in the logistics before you book — this is genuinely a step up from most kite holidays — but riders who make the effort tend to come back. Once on the island, the spot is within walking distance of the main strip. The flats themselves are the draw. Water depths can be measured in inches over vast stretches of white sand, giving the water that intense Bahamian turquoise that doesn't look real until you're standing in it. The wind arc covers north through east to south (0°–180°), and in practice it's the E/NE trade winds that do the heavy lifting here, typically running 12–22 knots through the December-to-May season. When those trades are established, conditions can look textbook: consistent pressure, readable gusts, and a short chop that's workable rather than punishing. The signature experience at Bimini Flats is the downwind run — riders talk about these the way surfers talk about a particular break. The shallow, flat water gives you a smooth, fast platform, and with the prevailing east or northeast wind, a well-planned session can cover serious ground. Sort out your return transport before you head out; retrievals on a remote flat without a plan in place are not comfortable. Skill level matters here. The sand bottom and shallow depth feel forgiving underfoot, but that same shallow water removes the option of a comfortable water recovery if things go sideways. Riders who are confident with self-rescue, comfortable in open and exposed conditions, and capable of managing their kite independently will get the most from this place. It is not a spot for beginners. After a session, the compact strip of North Bimini has everything within reach. Big John's and Bimini Big John's are both under 300 metres and cover food and lodging. Beetle Beach Bar, CJ's Deli, CJ's Sports Bar, and Coconut Brian are all within 550 metres. For dinner or drinks a little further along, Big Game bar & grill and Bimini Hideaway are under a kilometre away, and the Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina is another solid accommodation option on the island. December through May is when the trade winds are most reliable. Outside those months the wind becomes less consistent and the chance of unfavourable directions increases. Plan your trip around that window and Bimini Flats will very likely deliver on its reputation.
