Santa Maria is a small resort town on the southern tip of Sal island, Cape Verde, and the beach inside Baia de Santa Maria is Sal's premier kitesurfing destination. The geography does most of the work: a wide, arc-shaped bay that shelters the water from the open Atlantic while still catching the trade winds that funnel across the island from the northeast. The beach is a long stretch of white sand with a sandy bottom throughout — no rocks, no hidden obstacles, just a clean slope into shallow water. There is room to rig and lay out lines without crowding neighbouring riders, and the town is compact enough that most accommodation is within walking distance of the water. The wind here is the NE/ENE trade, running cross-onshore in the 20–26 knot range from November through June. Plan your trip inside that window and you can genuinely expect consistent, rideable conditions day after day. The cross-onshore angle matters: a fall or a depower sends you toward the beach, not out to sea, and there are no dangerous currents inside the bay. Both of those facts together make this a forgiving place to fly, especially for riders who are still building confidence. The water splits into two distinct zones. Close in to shore you get flat conditions — genuinely flat, the kind where beginners can body-drag and waterstart without fighting chop. Push out to around 300 metres and wind chop builds progressively, giving intermediates something to jump and carve without having to travel far offshore. The two zones coexist without conflict and there is room for all levels. Kite infrastructure on the beach is solid. Multiple schools operate directly on the sand — Kite Beach, Kite Beach – Sal Cabo Verde, Kite Beach Cabo Verde – Water Sports Center, and Kite Beach Coastline all have a presence here. Rescue boats are on standby. Gear rental is available on-site, which means you can travel light and sort yourself out when you arrive. Accommodation in Santa Maria covers a wide range. Atlantic Sal Hostel suits budget travellers; Blue Eagle Guesthouse and Hotel Morabeza sit in the mid-range; Meliá Dunas Beach Resort & Spa All Inclusive is the large resort option for those who want everything on-site. For food after your session, Il Gobbo ilha do Sal and Mitu & Djo are nearby. This place keeps showing up on experienced riders' lists for good reason: reliable trade winds, a naturally sheltered bay, flat water close in, and all the schools and rescue infrastructure you could want. Beginners can genuinely learn here; intermediates can build their riding.
