Pichilemu has one of those reputations that precedes itself. This coastal city in Chile's O'Higgins region sits on the Pacific shore, and it's been on the surfing radar for decades. For kiters, it's specifically Punta de Lobos — the headland south of town — that draws the crowd, offering some of the most serious wave-kite riding in South America. The spot splits into two distinct zones. Closest to the point itself, The Point delivers long, more sheltered waves — the trade-off is that wind can be lighter here, and you'll need to pick your sessions carefully. Infernillos sits further south and tends to catch a cleaner, stronger wind window: waves here are shorter, faster, and hollower, which suits experienced riders chasing power turns and aerials over long downwind runs. The wind engine is the Surazo — a southerly thermal that typically builds from midday into the evening, running anywhere from 15 to 30 knots when it's on. The usable kite window runs from south-southwest through to north-northwest (195°–345°), which means the wind can shift through a session; staying aware of the angle is part of riding here. The Pacific swell can be substantial, and Punta de Lobos is not a spot you want to underestimate. Cold upwelling water is a constant — a full wetsuit is non-negotiable, not a preference. Getting to the water takes a little navigation. Pichilemu town is the natural base, and the point is reached by heading south. Parking sits near the headland, and the path to the water varies depending on which zone you're launching from. At Infernillos the launch tends to be more direct, but the conditions are more committed once you're out. If you're less experienced or want to dial in your board skills before committing to Pacific swell, Cahuil lake sits about ten minutes from Pichilemu and functions as the local learning ground — flatter water, the same regional wind, and a much more forgiving environment. Back in town, Pichilemu has the character of a real surf community — practical, with a solid range of local spots to eat and drink. Bar La Virgen, Buen Amigo, Juana Ross, and Coffee Marley cover the café and bar side. For food, Casa Costa, Costa Luna, El Chavito, El monito, La Picá del Negro, and Playero all sit within reach. The town functions well as a week-long base without roughing it. Punta de Lobos is a destination for kiters who want to ride real waves in a real setting. The conditions can be challenging, the water is cold, and the riding demands a solid foundation. Get that right and you're at one of the southern hemisphere's standout wave-kite spots.
