About Nanshan Bay · Shantou

Nanshan Bay sits on a southeast-facing stretch of the Guangdong coast, about twenty minutes from downtown Shantou. That orientation is the whole story here: two monsoon systems take turns delivering cross-onshore wind across the same bay, making this one of the more reliably rideable spots in the region across a long combined season. The approach from Shantou is straightforward — the city is your reference point, and the bay is a short drive out. The launch beach is sandy, which is a good start, but bring footwear you don't mind getting dirty: shell debris is scattered through the upper beach and into the launch zone, so bare feet are a bad idea at rigging time. From November through March the northeast monsoon dominates, pushing wind from roughly 30–60° at 15–25 knots. On a southeast-facing bay that translates to a cross-onshore angle, which keeps things honest — you're not fighting a direct onshore, but the wind is working with the water rather than against it. Conditions in the heart of winter can be brisk, and the upper end of that wind range suits riders who know what they're doing with a kite. Intermediates will find plenty of good days in the middle of the range. June through September the pattern flips. The southwest monsoon comes in from 220–250° at 12–18 knots, still cross-onshore on this bay from the opposite direction. The southerly summer winds are softer on average, which opens the spot up to a wider range of abilities. Lighter riders or anyone on bigger kites will get more from the summer window; heavier riders may want to size up. The bay itself offers relatively contained water compared to an open ocean beach, which helps when conditions are building. That said, always read the water before launching — a bay is not a lake, and conditions can develop faster than they look from the sand. Weekends draw a crowd from the Guangzhou area, so the beach gets busy on Saturday and Sunday during peak season. If you prefer space to rig and a quieter launch window, a weekday visit is worth considering. There are no listed facilities at the spot itself, so arrive self-sufficient: water, fuel, and anything else you need should be sorted in Shantou before you head out.
