Pingtan Island sits at the mouth of the Taiwan Strait, and Longfengtou Beach faces directly east across the Haitan Strait — a natural funnel that earns this spot the reputation as China's windiest kite location. Annual average winds sit around 20 knots, and when the northeast monsoon establishes itself between October and April, side-onshore breezes in the 18–30 knot range dominate, making it some of the most consistent powered kiting on the Chinese coast. Pingtan Island is connected to the mainland and accessible by car. Longfengtou sits on the eastern shore of the island; the beach and surrounding area have developed substantially around the spot's reputation as an international race venue. The beach itself is wide and sandy, facing directly into the prevailing monsoon wind. The usable wind window runs from 10° through 170°, covering northeast through southeast. In the monsoon season that angle is side-onshore — honest enough to self-rescue if something goes wrong, and comfortable to work both upwind and down without fighting the angle. Behind tidal bars offshore, the water flattens out significantly, creating a sheltered stretch of smooth water that is the reason this venue has hosted PKRA and IKA competition events. Consistent power, flat water, and a defined riding area that scales from beginner-friendly to race-spec — it is an unusual combination that explains why Longfengtou has become China's flagship kite venue. Summer sees a southeast sea breeze take over — still within the wind arc, still rideable, but typically lighter and less predictable than the winter monsoon. If you are coming specifically for the conditions, October through April is the season that delivers. A Duotone Pro Center operates at the beach, covering rental equipment and instruction. That makes Longfengtou accessible to all levels without needing to travel with your own kit — if you are flying in light, the pro center has you covered. For those with their own gear, the flat water and reliable wind make this a strong choice for progression work or simply logging serious session hours. The tidal bars that generate the flat water shift with the tide, so check the current state before rigging and ask the local instructors about the riding area on any given day. Wind in the upper monsoon range — approaching 30 knots — is genuinely powerful, and kite size choice matters; size down conservatively if you are not confident in powered conditions. The Haitan Strait carries maritime traffic, so keep your eyes up when riding further offshore. Longfengtou has the pedigree of a competition venue and the infrastructure of a well-established pro center. For anyone travelling to Fujian, it is the one stop worth building a schedule around.
