About La Boquilla Beach

La Boquilla sits on a narrow strip of land just north of Cartagena's city limits, where a thin barrier beach separates the open Caribbean from a flat-water lagoon. That dual setup defines the riding here: the ocean side delivers proper Caribbean chop and full trade wind exposure, while the lagoon tucked behind the beach road is about as flat as kiteable water gets — a genuine contrast in one spot. Getting there is uncomplicated. La Boquilla is essentially a northern extension of Cartagena, close enough to reach by taxi from the city center or by following the coastal road north. The area is well-established for tourism, so you won't be arriving unprepared into the unknown. Parking runs along the beach strip. Launch is off a north-facing Caribbean beach, open to the full wind arc from 280° through to 80°. The trade winds arrive from roughly 340° to 50°, putting you on a solid side-to-side orientation for the launch. Peak season runs December through March when the trades are consistent, typically ranging 12–20 knots. Shoulder months can produce rideable sea breezes, though they're lighter and less dependable in terms of timing. On the ocean side, expect proper Caribbean chop when the trades are blowing — manageable for confident intermediates and a decent challenge for anyone looking to work on jumping or downwind runs. The shore break warrants attention at higher tide, so read it before you commit to a launch. The lagoon on the other side of the beach road is the real draw for beginners and freestylers: calm, flat, forgiving water that rewards anyone who has their upwind dialled in enough to get across. Cielomar KiteSurf School is based locally, which matters more than it might seem. If you are new to the spot or still learning, getting a session with someone who actually knows the local conditions and water setup is worth more than a day of trial and error. It also makes La Boquilla a workable destination for absolute beginners, not just seasoned riders. The surrounding area has real infrastructure. Restaurants including Bar El Alcatraz Científico, Blas El Teso Restaurant, Blue Restaurant Bar & Lounge, Dogger, and Estadero y Restaurante Playa Gourmet are nearby for post-session food. Accommodation options include Hotel Coco Beach Rooftop & Beach Club, Hotel Boquilla Suites, Hotel boquilla del mar 2, and Cabaña Yalis S.A.S., meaning you can base yourself at the spot rather than commuting from central Cartagena. Being this close to a major city cuts both ways. Everything you need is accessible, but you are sharing the water with boat traffic, swimmers, and other beach users. Situational awareness in the water is non-negotiable here. Best window is December through March — that is when the trades make La Boquilla worth building a trip around.
