About Soma Bay

Soma Bay sits at the tip of a Red Sea peninsula roughly 45 kilometres south of Hurghada, a self-contained resort community surrounded on almost all sides by water. The approach tells you this is a different kind of kitesurf destination: a single controlled entry gate, a 7-kilometre private road, and then the peninsula opens up — about 5 km long and 2 km wide, the lagoon spread out in front of you and the Red Sea stretching beyond. The riding area is the real draw. A shallow standing area roughly 2 km across offers flat water just 30 to 60 centimetres deep for most of its extent, giving beginners a confidence-building playground and freestylers a smooth surface for technical moves. The trade-off is the wind direction: north to northwest winds blow side-offshore across this area, which keeps the water flat but means you need to be clear about what lies downwind. The offshore gate here is always active — stay within the lagoon boundary and make sure rescue cover is in the water before you launch. This is not a spot to push limits in marginal conditions without a plan. The wind numbers are encouraging. Three hundred or more days of wind per year is the standing estimate for Soma Bay, and the window from March through November typically offers the most consistent sessions. The peninsula's exposed position tends to smooth the prevailing northerly flow, arriving clean and steady rather than gusty. Flat water, reliable wind, and a warm shallow lagoon add up to a setup that looks good for intermediate riders wanting to rack up hours. More advanced riders will find solid flat-water freestyle potential here, though the offshore nature means riding with a safety boat on standby is the smart call. Getting there means flying into Hurghada and heading south — roughly 45 km on the coastal road before the private access road branches off to the peninsula.
