L'Espiguette is a wild, 10-kilometre sand spit that stretches south from Le Grau-du-Roi into the Mediterranean, sitting at the edge of the Camargue. The name alone tells you what you're getting: unspoiled dune landscape, no beach clubs, no crowds — just a vast sweep of sand and open water that has earned its reputation as one of the finest undeveloped kite spots in France. Getting there is part of the experience. You park up and walk roughly 15 minutes through the dunes to reach the kite zone. Pack everything before you leave the car, because once you're out on the beach there's nothing waiting for you. That walk is also what keeps the casual crowd thin — the people who make it out here generally came for the wind. If you want to stay close, Camping Espiguette is the obvious base, and for post-session food you've got options nearby: Brasserie de l'Espiguette, La Paillote, Côté Plage, L'Effet Mer, L'Escale Aromatique, and L'Horizon for a drink. The wind picture splits into two distinct seasons. From May through September a thermal sea breeze builds from the south-southwest most afternoons, typically reaching 10–16 knots and holding reliably through the afternoon. It's consistent enough to plan a trip around, and in this direction the wind comes in cross-shore or slightly side-onshore — good conditions for intermediates to push their riding, and manageable for beginners under supervision. The usable kite window runs from northeast to south-southwest (45°–215°), and the summer thermal sits squarely inside it. Outside the summer thermal window, the Tramontane arrives from the northwest and strengthens considerably. This direction is side-offshore, and while experienced riders can work with it, the wind can be significantly stronger than the summer breeze. Solid upwind ability and honest self-assessment are both required before you launch in those conditions. L'Espiguette is an all-levels spot in summer and a rider's spot the rest of the year. The water is Mediterranean — typically flat to moderate chop close to shore, with more texture as you move out into open water. The wide sandy beach gives you good room to lay out lines and set up without crowding, and the open launch means no obstacles between you and the water. Two kite schools operate in the area: Hibiskite, and Vip-Rider (formally Kitesurfing School Wingfoil - Parawing - Foil / Experiences Sportives - Multi-Glisse), which also covers wingfoil and foil disciplines. If the summer thermal is your target and you want local knowledge or a lesson before heading out, both are worth a conversation. The honest pitch: L'Espiguette is the kind of spot you drive past on a holiday and wish you'd stopped for. The walk-in filters the crowd, the summer thermal is reliable and well-oriented, and the raw dune landscape is genuinely beautiful. Come prepared and self-sufficient — this place doesn't do handholding.
