La Franqui sits at the northern extreme of the Étang de Leucate — a long, narrow saltwater lagoon running parallel to the Mediterranean coast in Occitanie. The beach here faces the open sea directly, with the lagoon sheltered just behind. That geography is the whole story: two very different riding environments on opposite sides of the same strip of sand. The village is small and access is uncomplicated. Parking is available in the village and along beachfront roads; from there the launch beach is a short walk across the sand. On strong Tramontane days, rigging with a partner is practical necessity rather than habit — the wind on an open beach at 30-plus knots is unforgiving to the unprepared. The Tramontane is the defining wind here: a northwesterly running side-offshore along this stretch, gusting anywhere from 20 to 60 knots. That range is not an abstraction — the conditions at 25 knots and at 55 knots are completely different days. Downwind is out to sea, which means solid upwind ability and a clear self-rescue plan are prerequisites, not nice-to-haves. The Tramontane peaks in frequency and intensity from November through April, though it blows year-round. When it's on, the lagoon behind the beach becomes the smart choice — sheltered flat water, forgiving and fast, well suited to progression and freestyle. The secondary wind is the Marin, a southeasterly sea breeze that comes in onshore at around 10–18 knots. It's a milder and more approachable proposition — the onshore direction is forgiving if things go wrong, which makes Marin days the more accessible entry point for intermediates still gauging this spot's character. The Coussoules sand-bar concentrates the teaching infrastructure. CBCM Boarder Club Leucate La Franqui, Club Ecole Kitesurf Leucate, Kitepulsion, and Ecole Wing Foil Windsurf Leucate – F400 Surfschool all operate here with lessons and equipment rental. If you're new to the spot or arriving without gear, you're well served. Post-session, Fish and Blues and L'étang are convenient for food near the beach.
