About La Torche · Pors Carn

La Torche is one of Brittany's most recognisable headlands — a jutting promontory at the southwestern tip of Finistère that has hosted major kitesurf and windsurf competitions for years. The name carries real weight among kiters who know the Atlantic coast. The spot is split by the headland itself: for kiters, the action is in Pors Carn, the bay sitting to the left (south) of the headland, its arc of sandy beach facing broadly southwest into the open Atlantic. Getting here means driving through flat, windswept Breton countryside — the kind of landscape that tells you before you arrive that it's going to blow. Parking sits close behind the beach and the walk to the water is short. The beach is sandy but the bottom transitions to rock, so footwear for launching and landing is sensible, particularly at higher tides. Low tide is when conditions are generally at their best, giving you more sand and a cleaner approach. The kite zone in summer is on the left (south) bay — that boundary matters. More critically, there is a hard restriction in July and August between 13:00 and 19:00 when kiters must be off the water. Plan your sessions around the morning window or the evening slot and check the tidal state before you rig. Wind-wise, the bay's southwest orientation means S and SE winds come in side-onshore — solid for riders who want to stay within range of the beach without being pushed out. SW and W work too, and W and NW is where La Torche earns its reputation for powerful sessions with big Atlantic swell running through. The usable wind arc spans roughly SSE (160°) all the way around through S, SW, W and NW to N (340°), so the spot fires across a wide range of conditions. S and SE swell tends to produce the cleanest water; W and NW brings the big-wave character the headland is known for. The current is the thing to take seriously. Tidal flows exceeding 2 knots are not unusual, and the headland geometry can amplify streams in ways that are not immediately obvious from the beach. This is not a spot for beginners sorting out their water starts. Intermediate riders comfortable in current and swell will find it manageable on the right day; advanced riders will relish what the bigger conditions bring. A solid self-rescue and confident body-dragging skills are prerequisites, not optionals. Facilities around the spot are decent. For crêpes — and in Brittany you will want crêpes — La Creperie de la Torche and Crêperie Le Rayon Vert are nearby, with Pause Iodée, Nuance and TomCafé covering meals and quick stops. Chez Marie-Cath handles the bar and café. For accommodation, Camping de la Torche puts you right in the action and Aire de la Torche offers another nearby option. La Torche earns its reputation honestly. Real Atlantic exposure, real current, real consequences — rewarding when you're ready for it, humbling when you're not.
