Lac de Serre-Ponçon sits at 780 metres in the southern Alps — France's largest artificial lake, cradled between steep ridges and forested mountain peaks. This is not a coastal spot; it's a mountain playground where alpine thermals build across a wide, flat expanse of fresh water. The setting alone is worth the drive. The kite beach you want is Plage Les Eaux Douces, tucked between the villages of Savines-le-Lac and Crots on the lake's southwestern arm. Getting here means navigating mountain roads typical of this part of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur — scenic but not quick, so budget extra time if you're travelling from further afield. The beach gives you a solid setup area when the wind arrives. The wind here is thermal, driven by the surrounding Alps heating through the morning and building from the west-southwest. It typically switches on from around midday and runs reliably through the afternoon. During the prime May-July window, expect 10–25 knots — enough range to cover most riders on a standard two-kite quiver. The wind arc runs from ESE through south and west to WNW, so the lake's orientation works well when conditions fill in from the W-SW as they typically do. The water rewards you for the altitude. Mountain reservoirs don't build the chop you'd fight at a coastal break — the surface here is typically flat, which means you can focus on technique, progression, or comfortable cruising rather than punching through whitecaps. All levels can get something from this spot, though beginners should be aware that afternoon thermals can build quickly. Best season runs from March through July. The thermal pattern is most consistent from May to July; earlier in spring, wind is possible but less predictable. Crowds arrive from July onward as the lake becomes a popular holiday destination — if you're after uncrowded water with solid thermal odds, May and June are the sweet spot. After your session, several restaurants are in the area near the beach: Chez Barulo, La Cassolette, La Chaise Longue, La combe d'or, La Provence, and Le Relais Fleuri. Après-kite with mountain views reflected in the lake is a decent way to end the day. Mountain weather can shift in the afternoon — particularly in summer when valley heat builds. Keep an eye on conditions while you're riding and get off the water early if things start building overhead. The Alps play by different rules than a coastal sea breeze.
