About Temae Beach

Temae Beach occupies the northeast corner of Moorea, the island a short ferry crossing west of Tahiti. It's the largest public beach on Moorea, and for kiters arriving from Papeete, it's the most accessible first stop — the beach sits near the main ferry dock, and there's an airport close by, meaning you can be on the water without complex logistics on the same day you leave the capital. The beach fronts a shallow, enclosed lagoon with the kind of water clarity French Polynesia is known for. You can see the bottom clearly across most of the launch zone. The entry is sandy and the shallows are generous, which makes getting in and out of the water easier than on many reef-edged Pacific spots. Wind at Temae is driven by NE/E trade winds that push side-onshore across the lagoon. The usable window runs 315° through 135°, giving you a wide arc and a clean angle for launching from the beach. When the trades are running, the lagoon funnels the wind reasonably well. That said, sessions are typically available around 2–3 days per week — trades don't blow every day, so check conditions before you commit to the crossing. The critical thing to understand before you launch: the reef is downwind. In a shallow lagoon with consistent trade wind, you can cover distance quickly. Lose track of your position once and you're in trouble. Before you go in, identify where the reef line is, pick upwind reference markers on the beach, and know your exit. This is not a spot where you can zone out and drift. Skill-wise, Temae is best suited to intermediate and advanced riders. Solid upwind ability and good kite control are not optional here — they're what keeps you clear of the reef. The setting is stunning, and a rider who stays on top of their positioning will have an experience that's hard to beat: clear water, trade wind, Moorea's peaks in the background. But the beauty doesn't change what the reef does to you if you drift into it. Facilities are minimal. There are no listed kite schools, rentals, or services at this beach. Come self-contained: your own gear, a repair kit, water, and proper sun protection. The equatorial sun over open water is intense, and a long lagoon session will take it out of you if you're not prepared. The approach is one of Temae's real advantages. The ferry from Papeete drops you close to the beach, and the nearby airport adds a second option. No long overland transfers, no hunting for obscure launch sites — it's one of the more straightforward kite spots to reach in French Polynesia.
