About Fehmarn / Wulfener Hals

Wulfener Hals sits on the southeastern tip of Fehmarn, a Baltic island off the Schleswig-Holstein coast. What makes the spot work is a split in the terrain: a sheltered, shallow bay on one side and open Baltic exposure on the other — two genuinely different rides from the same parking lot. The bay side is where most riders spend their time. Shallow and well-protected, it keeps the water flat and manageable — the kind of surface where you can actually focus on technique rather than survival. It's the natural home for intermediates and kite school sessions, though experienced riders who just want clean flat-water laps will find it equally satisfying. East wind is the money direction — it loads the bay cleanly, angles in across the water, and produces the consistent conditions the spot is built around. The seaward face is a different environment: choppier water with small Baltic waves rolling through, better suited to riders who want something beyond flat training runs. Westerly gusts can push through on that exposed side, so keep an eye on direction shifts if you're planning time on the outer face. One rule to know before you arrive: daytime kiting in the bay is reserved for organized courses before 18:00. Free riders planning a bay session need to time it for the evening window, or head to the seaward side if they want water time earlier in the day. Tides are almost a non-factor here. The Baltic tidal range at Fehmarn barely exceeds 0.3 metres, so the shallow bay stays consistent throughout and you're not managing a shrinking launch window around water levels. There's a kite school on site, which means rental gear and instruction without off-site arrangements. Accommodation sits right at the water: Camping Wulfener Hals for the tent-and-van crowd, Home by the Sea for something more comfortable. The food and drink setup is well covered — Beach Bar and Brandung handle post-session cold drinks, Cafe Kontor, 360 Grad, and Café Sorgenfrei work for coffee and slower mornings, and the Bistro, Bistro in der Passage, and Cafe Sorgenfrei - Billabar cover proper meals. The usable wind window runs from 10° to 170° — NNE through east to SSE — with east sitting squarely at the sweet spot. That's a solid arc for a Baltic spot, and the combination of flat bay water, near-zero tidal variation, and a kite school on site makes Wulfener Hals a practical base for riders at multiple levels.
