Agios Nikolaos sits on the northern coast of Lefkada, a Greek Ionian island connected to the mainland by a short floating bridge. The spot centres on a shallow lagoon sheltered behind a strip of white sand beach — and you'll spot the small church of Agios Nikolaos perched on a dune as you come in, which makes it easy to locate. It's one of the more prominent kitesurfing destinations in Greece, drawing a steady crowd through the summer season. Getting there from the main island is straightforward. Follow the coastal road north and you'll reach the beach without trouble. The launch area is a generous white sand beach, flat and sandy underfoot. The water in front of it is exceptionally flat and clear, staying shallow across the bulk of the lagoon riding area. Walking out is easy and there are no significant obstacles underfoot, which makes entry and exit forgiving compared to many spots. Wind at Agios Nikolaos runs from the west to northwest — an arc of roughly 247° to 337° — driven by thermal patterns that build reliably through the summer months. The rhythm is typical for a daytime thermal: it builds as the land heats up through the morning, peaks in the early to mid afternoon, then eases off toward evening. Predictable enough to plan around, which is part of why this spot stays popular with travelling kiters. Outside the main summer window, consistency drops off, so timing your visit to the warmer months gives you the best odds. The flat, shallow lagoon water is what sets this place apart. Freestyle riders get a genuinely clean canvas — minimal chop, good visibility through the water, and the shallowness provides a margin when things go wrong at speed or during trick attempts. Intermediate and advanced riders will find it well-suited for pushing progression, and foiling is viable here too. At the same time, beginners do well here, thanks to the same combination of flat water, sandy bottom, and manageable thermal wind. Midday to late afternoon is the main wind window, which coincides with peak beach activity. Be deliberate about your launch and landing, keep your lines clear, and if you can get a second pair of hands for the launch, do it. Agios Nikolaos is a genuinely reliable summer spot. The flat water and consistent afternoon thermals make it accessible across a wide range of skill levels, and the setting — white sand, clear lagoon, church on the dune — makes it one of the nicer places to spend a kite session in the Ionian.
