Long 7 km city beach starting 1 km west of Heraklion centre. The north-facing coast is exposed to the summer Meltemi from the north-northwest, arriving side-shore to side-onshore and delivering 219 windy days per year. July–August conditions are excellent: 20–25 kt NW with flat-to-choppy water. Shallow, sandy bottom suitable for beginners; wave height builds towards the western end when the Meltemi is strong. Multiple kite and windsurf rental stations. Season April–October; peak July–August.
About Ammoudara (Heraklion)
Apollonia was an ancient city in northern Crete located near modern Gazi. Polybius reports an alleged incident in which the city was betrayed by Kydonia, a former ally.
