About Ammoudara (Heraklion)

Ammoudara is Heraklion's kitesurf backyard — a flat, sandy strip running 7 km along the north coast of Crete, starting roughly 1 km west of the city centre. The beach faces open sea to the north, which means when the Meltemi fires up, you're directly in its path: side-shore to side-onshore from the north-northwest, the cleanest possible angle for kitesurfing. With around 219 windy days a year, this is not a spot that asks you to wait long. The Meltemi is the defining feature here. It typically delivers clean northwest airflow that builds through the morning and holds well into the afternoon. Peak season is July and August, when 20–25 kt is a reasonable expectation on a good day. The wind arc runs from 260° to 80°, giving a broad usable window that handles shifting morning directions without drama. Water conditions run from flat to choppy depending on how hard the Meltemi is blowing. The bottom is sandy and shallow — the kind of setup that makes a water start forgiving. Towards the western end of the beach, wave height builds when the Meltemi comes in strong, which opens up a more dynamic ride for those who want it. The eastern section closer to the city stays flatter and is the natural home for beginners and those learning to waterstart or body drag. Multiple kite and windsurf rental stations operate on the beach, so if you're travelling without your own kit or need a repair, you're sorted without leaving the sand. The infrastructure here reflects how established the spot is — this is a well-used kite beach, not a secret. Access is straightforward. Ammoudara sits just outside Heraklion, and the coastal road brings you directly to the beach. Parking is generally available along the seafront. The beach is long enough that crowding is rarely a serious issue, though the main rental areas can get busy during peak weeks in high summer. For accommodation, Arhodiko Hotel sits practically on the beach at around 60 metres away, making it one of the closest options to the water. Amounda Bay is another option a few hundred metres down the strip, and Apollonia Beach Resort & Spa offers a larger resort option roughly 1 km from the beach. On the food side, Aptera Beach Restaurant is around 500 metres away, and Aphrodite and ammos beach bar offer the kind of post-session refuelling you'll need after a long afternoon on the water. Autostop, a bar and café, sits about 1.5 km from the beach if you want to stretch the evening. Season runs April through October. The Meltemi is most reliable — and most powerful — in July and August. Spring and autumn sessions can be excellent for those who prefer the spot with fewer people on the water.
