About Anavissos

Anavissos sits on the south Attica coast, roughly 45 km from Athens along the shores of the Saronic Gulf. The south-facing bay is one of the more accessible kite spots near the Greek capital — close enough for a day trip from the city, relaxed enough to base yourself here for a few nights. Getting there from Athens is straightforward: head south toward the Saronic Gulf and follow signs to Anavyssos. The beach has parking close to the water, so dragging a kite bag from the car is not a long walk. The bay itself is shallow and sandy, and that matters. The forgiving bottom gives beginners room to sort out body drags and water starts without the anxiety of sudden depth changes, and it makes self-rescue a manageable affair. Two kite schools — A Hands and Anavyssos — operate in the area, so first-timers and riders who want local coaching have options without travelling far. The wind is driven by the Saronic Gulf summer thermal. Mornings are typically calm — use that time to set up gear, grab a coffee, and watch the bay before committing to a session. By early-to-mid afternoon the south-to-southeast thermal fills the bay, consistently delivering 12–18 knots. The usable window runs from 110° through to 290°, so wind arrives from the southeast and swings through south — broadly cross-shore to onshore depending on the exact heading. Readable, consistent, not especially technical. Season runs May through September, with the thermal pattern most reliable in the core summer months. Expect the wind to build in the afternoon and hold into the early evening. Morning glass, afternoon thermal: once you know the rhythm here it becomes predictable. This spot suits beginners and intermediates well. The shallow water and consistent afternoon breeze make it a genuine progression spot. If you are chasing powerful conditions or technical riding, Anavissos on a typical day may feel mellow — but a well-powered thermal session here is still a solid afternoon on the water. One note on the approach: Anavissos sits south of the industrial Elefsis area, so the coastal road passes through some less scenic stretches before the bay opens up. Once you are at the water, the industrial backdrop is behind you. After a session, Agnanti is the closest restaurant at around 1.4 km. Anna Restaurant, CALOSTUS all day bar and restaurant, and Akrogiali are all within 5 km. For accommodation, Alexander Beach Hotel is the largest nearby option, with camping and smaller local stays also available in the area.
