Intermediate level; crowded in peak tourist season so good kite-management is essential. Season June–September.

About Koukounaries (Skiathos)

Koukounaries sits at the western tip of Skiathos, one of the Sporades islands scattered across the northern Aegean. The beach itself is widely regarded as one of the finest in Greece — a long crescent of white sand backed by a dense curtain of Aleppo pine, with the bay opening directly westward into open water. For kiters, the setting is more than scenery: that western exposure is exactly why the summer Meltemi works so well here. The Meltemi arrives from the north to northwest through the summer months. At Koukounaries it hits the beach side-shore, typically building through the morning and filling in properly during the afternoon. On a good day you can count on 15–20 knots of reasonably consistent breeze, with the pine-backed hills behind you providing some shelter at the edges but leaving the main bay open to the wind corridor. The water is shallow and sandy — warm through the season, good underfoot, and generally flat close to shore with manageable chop further out. The kiting area is at the northern end of the beach. This matters: Koukounaries is one of the most visited beaches in the Sporades, and the main stretch fills up quickly in peak season. The northern end gives you the room you need for proper kite management, but you'll still want to be deliberate about launching, especially in July and August when foot traffic is at its highest. A clean launch corridor and either a confident self-launch or a trusted helper are not optional here — they're the baseline. Skill level sits squarely at intermediate. Beginners should look elsewhere until they're confident with self-rescue and can handle a crowded environment. Riders who manage their space well will find a genuinely rewarding session — side-shore Meltemi is forgiving for water re-entries, the sandy bottom makes mistakes recoverable, and the afternoon windows are long enough for a proper ride. Koukounaries is in the southwest of Skiathos island, accessible by road from Skiathos Town. Distances are short on a small island and the beach is well-signposted. Parking is available near the beach, though it fills early on busy summer days. For accommodation close to the spot, Elivi Skiathos, Golden Beach Skiathos, Hotel Muses, Hotel Panorama Skiathos, Aelia Studios, and Aggelos Grand Studio are all in the area. After a session, Nest Beach Bar, Black Bird, Cookoonari Restaurant, and Kryfi Ammos Restaurant are nearby options for food and a cold drink. Season runs June through September. The peak Meltemi window — more reliable, stronger afternoons — falls in July and August, which also coincides with the heaviest tourist traffic. If you want a better conditions-to-crowd ratio, June and September are worth the consideration.
