About Vassiliki

Vassiliki sits at the southern tip of Lefkada in the Ionian Islands, tucked into a wide south-facing bay that opens toward the open Ionian Sea. The village has been a fixture on the European windwater sports map for decades — genuinely world-famous for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and the setup makes it obvious why: a protected bay with a sandy bottom, flat and shallow in the inner section, served by a reliable afternoon thermal that arrives side-onshore and gives you room to ride. That thermal is known locally as Eric. It funnels northwestward into the bay, typically kicking in around noon and building through the afternoon into evening. Expect peak conditions in the 15–20 knot range on a good day. The usable wind arc runs 90° to 270°, covering east through south to west — a generous window. One thing to build into your planning: Eric can push gusts well beyond 40 knots on its stronger days. That's not a reason to stay off the water, but it is a reason to size your kite conservatively. Launching overpowered in a bay that can spike like this is avoidable. The inner bay is where beginners belong. Flat water, sandy bottom, and the sheltered geometry of the bay make it one of the more forgiving places to learn or consolidate in this part of Greece. As you move toward the bay's mouth, conditions shift — more chop, more exposure, and more of a workout. That's where intermediate and advanced riders tend to push their sessions. Eric's side-onshore direction keeps launching and landing manageable along most of the beach, and you're not immediately downwind of anything problematic if a session goes sideways. Because Eric is a thermal, mornings are usually calm. There's no point rushing to the water at sunrise. Rig up, have breakfast, and plan to be ready from noon. The season runs May through October, with mid-summer typically delivering the most consistent conditions. Earlier and later in the season can reward patient riders with quieter water and fewer crowds. The village of Vassiliki is compact and everything is within walking distance.
