About Togcha Bay

Togcha Bay sits on Guam's southeastern coast, where a coral fringe reef turns a stretch of the Pacific into one of the island's most reliable kite spots. Better known locally as Jeff's Pirate Cove, this is where the Guam Kiteboarding Club has made its home — a reliable indicator that the conditions here are worth showing up for consistently. The reef flat creates a large, flat riding zone that runs one to six feet deep over coral bottom. When the northeast to east trade winds fill in — most reliably from November through April during the dry season — you get steady conditions across a broad area with minimal swell interference. Outside that prime window there's still wind around, though consistency drops off. If you're travelling specifically to kite, the Nov-Apr dry season gives you the best odds by a margin. The usable wind arc spans 0° to 180°, covering northerly through easterly to southerly winds. The NE and E trades that dominate the dry season sit comfortably within this range, delivering cross-shore to cross-onshore conditions across the riding zone. Wind typically runs 10-20 knots during the peak season — consistent enough to plan sessions rather than hope something materialises. Water character is defined by the reef flat: flatter than anything you'd find on open ocean, well-suited to freestyle and flat-water riding. That calm surface comes with a trade-off though — the coral bottom is real and shallow in places. Booties aren't optional etiquette here, they're standard kit. A fall on coral in one foot of water is a different situation from sand. Get familiar with the depth variations across the zone before you start pushing your riding. The large riding area gives you room to work with, but this spot is intermediate and above for a reason. You need confident water skills, reliable self-rescue, and the judgement to navigate a reef environment. If you're still building those foundations, Togcha Bay is worth aspiring to rather than starting at. Jeff's Pirates Cove restaurant is right at the spot, making post-session logistics easy — food and drinks without needing to drive anywhere. The Guam Kiteboarding Club operates out of here; if you're visiting from off-island, connecting with local riders through the club is the smartest move you can make. They know the reef contours, the tidal windows, and the lines worth exploring. Guam is a US territory in the western Pacific, which simplifies entry for US travellers and makes gear transport more manageable than many remote Pacific alternatives. The island is compact, so the bay is reachable from most accommodation bases without significant driving.
