Mandvi Beach sits at the mouth of the Rukmavati River in Gujarat's Kutch district, a historic port town on India's western coastline. You arrive expecting a beach and find something richer: traditional dhow-building yards operating directly on the sand, craftsmen shaping wooden sailing vessels using methods that predate kitesurfing by several centuries. It's an unusual place to rig up, and that contrast is exactly what makes it memorable. The spot has a practical credential worth knowing: Asia's first coastal wind farm was built nearby, and that's a meaningful sign — whoever built it knew the wind here is consistent. The NE trades run October through March, typically delivering 10–20 knots. The usable kite window runs 140°–280°, a broad south-to-west arc that covers the typical NE trade direction well and gives you some tolerance for minor day-to-day shifts. Wind comes off the flat Kutch coastal plain with relatively little obstruction, which helps keep it steady rather than gusty. The beach is wide and sandy. Your launch area is the main open stretch — keep clear of the active dhow yards, which are working sites with materials and machinery, not spectator zones. The Rukmavati River mouth introduces current at the eastern end of the beach; factor that into your launch position and your downwind margins. The Indian Ocean exposure means that when conditions are on, the water has some character — open-ocean chop rather than a flat lagoon. Skill level: intermediate. You want reliable water starts, solid upwind ability, and the confidence to handle some current near the river mouth. Come here when you're already comfortable in the water, not when you're still working on your basics. There's a local water sports operation on site running a kitesurfing school, which is handy for a site briefing or gear logistics. For food, Norani and OSHO loj are both restaurants in the area. Rukmavati guest house provides accommodation nearby, and Mandvi itself is a proper town — you won't struggle for the essentials. Getting there is straightforward: Mandvi is accessible by road and the beach is reachable from the town centre, with parking available near the waterfront. Timing is everything. The SW monsoon from July to September makes conditions too rough to ride safely — the Indian Ocean exposure that gives you real water texture in winter becomes a problem in monsoon months. Stick to the October–March window. Consistent winter wind, a working heritage beach, and a spot that genuinely looks like nowhere else on the kitesurf map — if you're routing through Gujarat, Mandvi earns a session.
