About Varkala Cliff Beach

Varkala is one of India's most recognisable coastal spots — dramatic cliffs drop almost vertically to a west-facing beach, giving the whole place a backdrop unlike anything else on India's coast. Kerala's Arabian Sea coastline is fully exposed here, and that exposure is exactly what drives the SW monsoon swell and wind that kiters come for. The kite season runs from May to September, driven by the Southwest monsoon pushing consistent 15–25 knot winds across the Arabian Sea. The wind arc covers 180° through to 359°, meaning southerlies, south-westerlies, westerlies and north-westerlies all sit in the usable window — that's a wide band, and during peak monsoon the SW quadrant dominates. One thing to understand before you arrive: the main cliff beach itself is a surf and swimming beach, popular with tourists, and the wave action and crowded water make it a technical proposition for kitesurfers. This spot is primarily for experienced riders who can read swell, manage a powered kite in onshore conditions, and confidently self-rescue in open ocean. If you're still building hours, the cliff beach isn't where you want to learn. The go-to kite zone is the flat-water area that forms approximately one kilometre south of the cliff beach. That stretch of shoreline offers cleaner water for riding — it's where you want to focus your session, especially if you're looking for a more controlled environment. Getting local knowledge on the exact launch point for the southern zone before you arrive is well worth it. The wind here doesn't mess around in monsoon season. The Arabian Sea fetch is long, gusts can be significant, and the sea state can change faster than the forecast suggests. Checking conditions on the day rather than relying purely on the forecast is sensible practice. After your session, the clifftop strip has everything you need. AG CAFE and Sathyan Cafe are straightforward stops for a drink. Mammas Champos, London Street Fish and Chips, and Arabian Choolah are all close by. For something more substantial, Chimney Family Restaurant, Hotel Suprabhatham Restaurant, and Hotel Aryas Pure Veg round out the options. The Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) Beer Parlour is the no-frills spot for a cold one with a sea view. Varkala pairs well with Kovalam to the south — if conditions aren't cooperating at one spot, the other is a short drive away. Together they make a solid Kerala kite trip during the SW monsoon window.
