Pero Beach sits on the southwest-facing coast of West Sumba, tucked just outside the gates of the Nihiwatu Resort beside the small fishing community of Pero village. Sumba is part of East Nusa Tenggara in eastern Indonesia — not the most convenient destination to reach, but that's exactly why it stays uncrowded. Fly into Tambolaka Airport on Sumba's western end and count on roughly 45 minutes by road to get to the coast. The season runs May through October, when the Southeast trade wind establishes itself and blows side-onshore across the bay at typically 15–25 knots. The usable kite window spans 140° to 290°, and the SE trades sit squarely inside that arc, giving a favourable side-onshore angle for riders working the waves or freeriding across the bay. What sets Pero apart from sheltered bay spots is the exposure: this beach faces open Indian Ocean, and that unobstructed fetch pushes clean, organised swell onto the sand — long rolling waves rather than the short choppy mess you get in enclosed bays. It is a wave-kiting spot, full stop. The beach is classic West Sumba: white sand, turquoise water, and tropical vegetation behind the launch zone. Laying out lines is not a problem — there is space, and with few other kiters around you are not jostling for position. Launch is beach-direct. The open-ocean exposure and lack of nearby support make it a poor choice for beginners or those still building their wave skills. Conditions can shift and strengthen — treat the Indian Ocean with the respect it asks for.
