Pantai Tabuhan sits on a small island in the middle of the Bali Strait — the narrow channel separating Banyuwangi on Java's eastern tip from Gilimanuk on Bali's western coast. There is no road access, no ferry terminal. You get here by arranging a local boat from either town, and that crossing gives you a useful first read of how the Strait is behaving before you rig up. The island punches well above its size in terms of wind. It sits directly in the cross-channel trade flow, with a NE-facing aspect that catches the Strait's prevailing airstream cleanly. From May through October the trade winds push consistently above 25 knots, making this one of the most reliably powered spots in the entire Java–Bali corridor. The usable wind window runs from roughly NNW around through north, northeast and out to ESE (320°–100°), which gives cross-shore and cross-on angles along the NE-facing shoreline when those trades are firing. The water is crystal-clear — the kind of visibility that rewards anyone who ends up under it — but don't let the aesthetics distract from the operational reality. The Bali Strait is a serious piece of water. Strong currents run through the channel and at this spot they are the defining hazard. This is why Tabuhan sits firmly in the advanced-rider category: not because the wind is technically difficult, but because a swim or a downwind drift here does not end on a friendly shore. There are no facilities on the island at all — no rental shops, no launch assistance, no rescue infrastructure, no food or water. Everything you need for the session, and everything you need if things go wrong, comes with you from the mainland. Plan accordingly: safety leash in good condition, self-rescue skills current, a buddy at minimum, and ideally a conversation with your boat operator about staying on the water while you ride. Once the logistics are handled, the sessions can be exceptional. Consistent power, clear water, and minimal crowds are the payoff for the effort. The channel can generate chop when conditions build, but there are flatter sections depending on your position. For the right rider — genuinely advanced, self-sufficient, and comfortable managing strong water movement — this is a spot that earns its reputation. Reliable trade winds well above 25 knots for months at a stretch, crystal visibility, and the kind of remoteness that keeps lineups thin.
