Vieste · Scialmarino sits about 5 km south of Vieste town on the Gargano promontory — Puglia's dramatic headland that pushes further into the Adriatic than any other point on Italy's east coast. The beach here, known locally as Spiaggia Lunga or Scialmarino, is a long, straight strip of sand that faces due east, and that orientation is what makes it work for kiting. Getting there from Vieste is direct: follow the coast road south from town and the beach opens up alongside the road. The area has an established water-sports presence, with kite schools operating directly on the sand. The launch area is straightforward — wide sandy beach, room to lay lines, no reef to worry about. The seabed is sandy and shallow, which is good news for beginners getting dragged under a failed water-start and for anyone body-dragging back to shore. The Gargano cliffs to the north buffer the beach from direct northerly exposure, keeping conditions more manageable when the wind has a northern component. Wind arrives from two directions, and both are usable. The Maestrale blows from the northwest; the Scirocco comes up from the southeast. With the shore facing east, both deliver side-onshore conditions — you're tracking along the beach rather than getting pushed onto it or sent offshore. That's a solid safety profile for a beach launch. Thermal development builds from midday, so if you arrive in the morning and the flags are limp, give it time. The riding suits a wide range of levels. The shallow flat water near shore is forgiving for beginners and useful for freestyle, while the open Adriatic beyond gives advanced riders room to stretch out and run downwind. The cliff-backed Gargano setting makes the visual backdrop one of the better ones on this stretch of Adriatic coast. Facilities are well covered. Bars and cafes within reach include La Dolce Vita, Matteosky, New Snack Bar, Bar del corso, Bar del Porto "da ginetta", Morrison Hotel, and Pasticceria Ferri. For a sit-down meal after a session, Encanto, Napoli, and Notte e Di are nearby. On-site kite schools handle tuition, gear rental, and local knowledge. The main thing to manage: the beach is popular in summer and shared with swimmers and bathers. Time your launch for quieter windows — early morning or late afternoon are typically calmer on the sand. Give other beach users a wide berth when rigging and launching.
