About Choshi Beach

Choshi sits at the tip of a cape on the Pacific coast, east of Tokyo in Chiba Prefecture. The beach faces east, which sets it up perfectly for the summer sea breeze that funnels in from the southeast across open ocean. Consistently rated one of the best kite spots in the Kanto region, it pulls riders from the capital who want reliable wind without the long drives that most Pacific coastal spots demand — the JR Choshi Line runs directly here from Tokyo. The wind arc covers 10° through 170°, a wide window that takes in everything from near-northerly to southeast. The bread-and-butter here is the SE sea breeze, typically sitting between 130° and 160° and running 15 to 25 knots through the June to October season. That direction puts the wind side-to-side-onshore for the east-facing beach, which is a comfortable angle — you have room to run, and a drift downwind keeps you in safe water rather than pulling you toward shore or straight offshore. The beach is sandy with easy ocean access and no obvious technical launch complexity — it runs cleanly to the water's edge. What you do get is full Pacific exposure, which means proper open-ocean swell rather than a flat, sheltered bay. Depending on the day's groundswell, you will be riding over rolling bumps or proper chop, which is part of the appeal if you want something more alive than a lake session. It also means the spot is not a beginner's sandbox — open-ocean conditions ask for solid water confidence alongside your kite skills. For intermediate and advanced riders, the June-to-October window is reliable enough to plan a trip around. The SE breeze tends to build as summer settles in, peaking through the mid-season months. The wind arc's northern edge is technically in range but less typical — the SE thermal is what Choshi is actually known for. After a session the local lineup takes care of you. Kikaku Sushi, Magurogura, and Okubo Sushi are nearby for food, and Kampo Cafe covers the post-session drink. For staying overnight, options run from guesthouses like Kikaku Guest house and Ashika-so through to hotel stays at Choshi Kamome Hotel, Choshi Plaza Hotel, Hotel Sunrise Choshi, and Solana銚子犬吠埼. The JR access also makes a day-trip from Tokyo entirely feasible if you would rather not stay over.
