About Watamu

Watamu sits on a small headland on Kenya's Indian Ocean coast, roughly 105 km north of Mombasa and 15 km south of Malindi, pinched between the Blue Lagoon and Watamu Bay. The setting is immediately striking — a World Heritage coastal zone with around 5 km of beach, multiple sandbars, and warm Indian Ocean water shared between tourist boats, fishermen, and kiters. The wind arc runs from 5° to 155°, which slots in both of Kenya's main trade winds neatly. From December through April, the Kaskazi arrives from the northeast, typically running 20–25 knots. It pushes flat, relatively manageable water across the bay — the kind of session that rewards freeride riding and gives intermediate riders room to breathe. Come June, the Kusi takes over from the southeast at 25–30+ knots, and the bay character shifts to wave faces that intermediates and experienced riders tend to seek out. The seasonal split between flat and waves is one of Watamu's stronger arguments: depending on when you show up, you get a different spot. The beach itself is the launch area, and the multiple sandbars create varied water textures depending on where you set up. Beach width can narrow at high tide in places, so it's worth checking before you rig. The 5 km stretch means you usually have room to find a clean patch. The town runs on tourism and fishing in roughly equal measure, which gives it a working-coast feel without the manufactured resort polish. Hemingways, Aquarius beach, Blue Bay Cove, Mawe Boutique, and Hosteria Romana cover accommodation at different price points. Eating is sorted at Dunjee Beach Da Mario, Baobab Village, Bilbao, and Mapango. Love Island Beach Bar is the obvious post-session stop. The fishing port keeps the harbour end of town grounded in something real. Getting there from Mombasa is a standard coastal drive of around 105 km — a well-traveled tourist route. Malindi, 15 km north, is the nearest larger town for supplies or banking. The Blue Lagoon and Watamu Bay both carry swim zones, which means awareness of other water users is part of the deal — particularly in peak tourist months when beaches are busy. The sandbar layout can also shift with tide and season, and the first few sessions benefit from local knowledge on where the shallows run. For skill level: the Kaskazi window is the easier entry point — 20–25 knots with flat water is a solid intermediate platform. The Kusi months push harder, and the wave options suit riders already comfortable with powered-up conditions. Both seasons can bring gusts, so wind awareness throughout the session matters. Watamu is a genuinely consistent dual-season spot on a coast where that consistency is not guaranteed.
