About Liepāja

Liepāja sits on the Latvian coast of the Baltic Sea, and its long sandy beach south of the harbour is one of the more approachable kitesurf spots in the eastern Baltic. The beach runs south from the harbour breakwaters, and it's that sheltered position — tucked between two breakwaters — that takes the edge off the Baltic swell and creates the flat-to-choppy conditions that make this spot work for a broad range of riders. The shore faces west, so your ideal wind comes from the northwest or southwest. The usable kite window runs from south-southwest through to north-northwest (190°–350°), which captures the most common Baltic wind directions through the main season. With a pure westerly, the wind is cross-onshore and the water builds to medium waves; swing to the northwest or southwest and things flatten out considerably, giving you a much more manageable session. Getting to the spot is straightforward — Liepāja is a port city with good road connections, and the beach south of the harbour is easy to find. You can typically get a vehicle close to the launch area. The sand is long and wide, giving you plenty of room to rig and set up without feeling cramped. The water character here rewards progression riding. Flat to choppy is the norm, which means this isn't a big-air or wave spot — it's the kind of place where you work on technique, nail transitions, and clock real mileage. Beginners will appreciate the manageable conditions and the protection the breakwaters provide from the worst of the Baltic chop. Intermediates can have a solid session here, especially when the westerlies push in and the water picks up some texture. The season runs from March through November. The Baltic doesn't warm up quickly, so a full wetsuit is standard kit for most of that window — at the shoulder months you'll want boots and gloves to stay comfortable in the water. For food and drink after your session, there's a good spread nearby. Coffee and a sit-down at Bruno, Cafe Juliet, Darbnīca, or Elpub. If you want a proper meal, Čello, Divi Naži, Dragon Sushi, Fontaine Delisnack, Hot potato, and La Dolce Vita are all in the area. This is Baltic kitesurfing — not the Caribbean, not a guaranteed wind factory, but reliable and honest. If you're looking for a spot where conditions suit learning and steady progression without the crowds of the more famous European destinations, Liepāja is worth making the trip for.
