About Jiyeh

Jiyeh sits on Lebanon's Mediterranean coast about 25 kilometres south of Beirut, making it the country's most accessible kite destination and, by most accounts, its most popular. The spot centres on a marina and wavebreaker setup that creates two distinct riding environments in the same location: sheltered, flat water inside the break and open chop or small-to-medium waves beyond it. Getting here from Beirut is a direct drive south along the coast. The marina area is the natural staging ground — the wavebreaker is your orientation point, and the flat section inside gives you room to rig, launch, and sort yourself out before committing to open water. The wind pattern that makes Jiyeh work runs north to north-northwest, typically in the 12–22 knot band. This is the wind the spot is built around: consistent enough to plan a trip, with a usable arc that spans from due south through west and around to just north. The NNW direction is the sweet spot; when it's in that range and direction, the conditions stack up well. Inside the wavebreaker the water is flat — genuinely so. This is why the spot works for beginners: there's room to practise water starts and body drags without fighting constant chop. Push out beyond the break and the water picks up more texture — light chop on the lower end of the wind range, small-to-medium wave faces when conditions build. Intermediates and experienced riders tend to push further out and work the open water. Reefs are present in the area, and that is the main hazard to know before you launch. Establish your downwind exit on arrival, check local knowledge about where the hazards sit, and do not drift blind. The spot does not punish you for being there, but it rewards riders who have done their homework. The season runs March through September. Summer sits at the heart of it, with the most consistent wind and the biggest local crowd. Outside that window, conditions become less reliable. On the facility side, Damour Country Club runs kite school operations on site — useful if you are new to the spot or want local instruction. For food post-session, Jnaidy seafood and Marina Fish Restaurant handle the fresh catch end, while Captain M, Azzi bakery, and Burger bro cover other options nearby. Accommodation is well catered for: Golden Tulip Jiyeh Marina, Jiyeh Marina Resort Hotel & Chalets, La Fontaine Beach Resort, and Chir Bay are all in the area. Jiyeh earns its status as Lebanon's go-to kite spot through consistent northerly winds, a naturally protected launch zone, and enough infrastructure that you can show up, ride, eat, and sleep without improvising.
