Babaomby sits at the absolute northern tip of Madagascar, where the Mer d'Émeraude spreads wide and the SE trade wind arrives with almost no interruption. The lagoon runs approximately 12 kilometres by 3 kilometres — a substantial body of sheltered water with offshore reefs on the outer edge defining two wave zones for riders willing to venture beyond the flat. Getting here takes serious planning; the location is remote even by Madagascar standards, and the final approach to the northern cape demands logistics you will want to organise well in advance. The trade wind season runs April through November. During those months, wind sits above 20 knots on roughly 98% of days, ranging up to 35 knots at the stronger end of the range. The wind direction falls in the 190°–350° usable kite window, delivering side-onshore conditions across the lagoon — the water stays manageable inside while consistent power pushes through the session. On the outer reefs, two distinct wave zones offer a different kind of challenge for riders looking to push further. Inside the lagoon, the scale gives you room to run. Downwind sessions, powered riding, finding your own patch of flat water and staying there — all of it is available on a 12-kilometre stretch. The side-onshore angle from the SE trades means your drift is relatively predictable, but do not let that lull you into underestimating the place. Babaomby is firmly expert territory. The remoteness changes the risk equation compared to a developed kite beach: self-sufficiency matters here, rescue cover is not a given, and when something goes wrong the margin for error is thinner. Come with your gear dialled, your self-rescue solid, and a clear safety plan. Gear range across the season spans 20 to 35 knots, which asks for a quiver covering both ends. A smaller high-wind kite for the peak of the trades and a mid-size option for lighter or shoulder-month days will handle most situations. Riders heading to the outer wave zones should pack a directional board suited to reef conditions. On-site accommodation includes Babaomby island lodge and Les Paillottes de Babaomby, both positioned close to the water. There is a restaurant for post-session meals. Beyond those options, facilities are minimal — spare lines, leaders, bar components, and anything else you rely on should travel with you from the nearest town, because resupply at the cape is not a quick errand. April through November is the window. Shoulder months suit a first visit well: slightly lighter conditions give you a chance to read the lagoon and the reef layout before committing to the full trade wind power. Mid-season delivers the strongest and most consistent wind if that is what you are after. Babaomby earns its reputation. The consistency is real, the potential is obvious, and the remoteness is not incidental — it is the point.
