About Kooddoo (Gaafu Alifu Atoll)

Kooddoo sits at the southern end of the Maldivian archipelago in Gaafu Alifu Atoll — one of those rare spots where the domestic airport island doubles as a kitesurf destination. It's a long way from Malé geographically, but the flight is direct and the reward is a south-facing beach with a flat lagoon and clean southwest monsoon wind running from May through October. Getting here is straightforward by Maldives standards: domestic flights connect Malé to Kooddoo airport, so there's no multi-leg speedboat transfer grinding hours across open ocean. You land, and the beach is essentially already there. The launch is off the south-facing beach, exposed to the full sweep of the southwest monsoon. When the SW wind locks in — typically blowing from 210 to 240 degrees — it hits the beach side-onshore, which is about as user-friendly a setup as you'll find this far into the Indian Ocean. There's no significant swell to contend with and the lagoon in front is flat and forgiving. The usable kite window runs 100 to 260 degrees, so there's also some SE variation when the wind swings early or late in the season — that range means you're not waiting on a perfectly dialed direction. Wind through the core season runs 15 to 22 knots. The water character is the main sell for newer riders: flat lagoon, no surf, consistent side-onshore direction. It adds up to a beginner-friendly setup that's genuinely uncommon this far south in the Maldives. Experienced riders will find Kooddoo a relaxed freeride session rather than a technical challenge, but sometimes clean, uncrowded freeriding at the edge of the Indian Ocean is exactly what you're after. The Mercure Maldives Kooddoo Resort is the accommodation anchor on the island. Post-session, The Beach Bar and Maakeyn handle the wind-down drinks, while ALITA, Alita Pool Bar, Vista, and the Pool Bar cover more substantial dining. Kooddoo Marina Cafe and Sprinkles Bakery are there for a casual bite or coffee. It's a small island, but the infrastructure is solid. A few practical things to flag: you're almost on the equator here, so UV is aggressive even under cloud cover — full sun protection is not optional. Because this is a remote southern atoll, kite gear resupply simply doesn't happen locally. Bring what you need from Malé; there's no backing out of that one mid-trip. Also worth knowing your downwind exit before you launch — it's an airport island, so the water sports setup is more resort-casual than dedicated kite school, and rescue logistics are less defined than at purpose-built kite centres. Kooddoo works for riders who want a genuine Maldivian kite experience without liveaboard complexity. The south monsoon window is real, the lagoon is flat, and the connection from Malé is direct. Not a high-performance wave venue — clean, accessible freeriding in a remote atoll, which is its own kind of excellent.
