Cabo San Lucas sits at the tip of Baja California Sur, where the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet in a dramatic pinch point. The kiting here is Sea of Cortez business — Medano Beach lies on the calmer, bay-facing side of the cape, sheltered from the Pacific swell that hammers the exposed western shore. It's a major resort town, and that shapes the whole experience: everything is convenient and within reach, but you're sharing the water with swimmers, boat traffic and the general buzz of a busy tourist beach. The launch at Medano Beach is easy — a long sandy stretch with hotels, bars and restaurants lining the back of the beach. No rough tracks, no hike-ins, no tricky access to negotiate. The water in the protected bay runs flat to light chop close to shore, which makes it a manageable environment for free riding and freestyle. Further out, as the afternoon thermal fills in, you can find some texture to play with. The wind here is driven by afternoon thermals. Through the morning the Baja desert heats up, and by midday sea air pulls in off the Sea of Cortez. When it's on, it delivers a wide usable arc — westerly through northerly to easterly — but it's still a thermal, meaning mornings can be light and inconsistent. Time your session for the afternoon; don't rig before the wind has actually shown up. Season is November through March. Outside that window the thermal pattern loses reliability and the broader weather shifts. Within season there can be good runs of afternoon wind, but conditions vary significantly from day to day — patience and flexibility will serve you better than a rigid schedule. The facility situation at Medano Beach is generous, as you'd expect from a major resort. Amiga's, Cafe Cabo, Alan Bird and Café Etrusca cover drinks and café stops. Cabo Jack's, Casa Valentina and El Peregrino are restaurant options close by. Accommodation in the area includes Cabo Cush, Cabo Vista Hotel and Colmena Hotel Los Cabos Marina, all within the resort zone. Before you rig, scan the beach: swimmer zones, boat launch lanes and beach vendor activity all need to factor into your entry and exit plan. The bay sees regular motorised water traffic — tourist operators and boat tours — so staying clear of vessel lanes is part of the session, not an afterthought. The Baja sun is intense even in the cooler winter months; bring plenty of water and factor heat into your shore-time planning. For a rider who wants to combine a proper vacation with some kiting, Cabo can deliver. Comfortable base, convenient facilities, decent afternoon wind in season — just manage expectations around the beach crowd and treat the riding as a great bonus to the trip.
