Tucked along the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, the lagoon between Río Lagartos and the fishing village of San Felipe is one of Mexico's quieter kitesurf finds. The riding area sits inside the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve — a protected wetland known for pink flamingos and crystal-clear, shallow water. The setting doesn't look like a kitesurf spot: you can wade across much of the riding area, and flamingo colonies are part of the backdrop. That's part of the draw. The classic session here is a downwinder. You launch from Río Lagartos and ride roughly 15 kilometres along the lagoon to San Felipe, where the route ends on the sheltered bay. The lagoon runs flat water the whole way — no real swell reaches in — so you're looking at smooth, fast riding with minimal chop. The bottom is shallow sand throughout, which makes it forgiving territory for riders working on water starts and board recoveries. Winds come in from the north, northeast, and east — side-onshore to the lagoon's southern shore — and run from November through to August. You're typically looking at 10 to 25 knots across that window, with the stronger end more common in the peak months. The broad usable wind arc means conditions can shift in direction without shutting down a session, and the lagoon's shape channels the breeze well along the riding corridor. Being inside a biosphere reserve shapes the experience in practical ways. The area has a genuinely remote feel once you're on the water, and on-water support is unlikely to be nearby. Both villages are accessible by road from the Yucatán interior, but most riders arrange their own return transport from San Felipe before they launch — there's no dedicated shuttle, so sorting that out first is the sensible move. Facilities are minimal. San Felipe is a small fishing village — don't expect kite infrastructure at the waterfront. No school, no rental shop. Riders who come here typically arrive self-sufficient. If you're newer to the sport, a guide with local knowledge of the reserve is a practical addition rather than a luxury. The shallow flat water and side-onshore breeze make this accessible for beginners and progressing intermediates, particularly those working on downwinder runs in easy conditions. Advanced riders come for the distance and the setting rather than any technical challenge. It rewards planning ahead — the remoteness and the protected-area context mean this is a spot for people who come prepared, not those who figure it out on arrival.
