The proximity to the border explains the crowd: this is where South African kiters head when they want consistent, quality riding without a multi-day expedition. The spot's real strength is its dual character. On the sheltered side, a flat-water lagoon offers a readable, manageable surface suited to technique work, unhooked moves, and sessions where you want speed without fighting swell. On flat water days it's genuinely rewarding — carving turns, working up speed, practising transitions in clean conditions. Paddle out toward the open ocean and the picture changes: Indian Ocean swells, proper waves, and riding conditions that demand more from both rider and kite. Having both environments accessible at the same spot is what gives Ponta do Ouro its range. Wind here runs consistently from the southeast and northeast, typically sitting in the 15–25 knot range.
