About IJmuiden

IJmuiden sits at the mouth of the North Sea Canal — the main waterway connecting Amsterdam to the sea. The town straddles the canal entrance, with large sea locks handling international shipping on one side and, to the south, one of the most accessible North Sea kite beaches on the Dutch coast on the other. The main kite area is Kennemerstrand, a wide sandy beach south of the Zuidpier. That pier is a substantial engineering structure that tempers the raw North Sea conditions before they reach the beach — without it, you'd be dealing with fully unfiltered Atlantic exposure. Even with the Zuidpier's shelter, expect proper North Sea conditions: wave action, rough chop over shallow sandbars, and tidal current that shifts in both strength and direction with the tide cycle. The beach is genuinely wide with a gradual slope into the water. It stays shallow for roughly 100 metres from shore — giving riders useful margin on gusty days and setting up good conditions for southwest and west winds, when you can run long distances parallel to the waterline without suddenly finding depth. The usable wind window covers south through west to north, capturing most of the prevailing weather that rolls in off the North Sea. The hazard picture demands full attention before you launch. The North Sea Canal mouth sits immediately to the north, with large sea locks and active international shipping traffic. Staying south of the Zuidpier isn't a guideline — it's the boundary that keeps you out of a navigation channel used by cargo vessels. Tidal currents are a real variable: conditions shift meaningfully with the tide, so check the state before rigging. The north bank of the canal is dominated by a steel plant, giving IJmuiden an industrial skyline that's unmistakable from the water and doubles as a useful directional landmark. To the south, the plant-covered dunes of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park mark the other boundary — a protected reserve that keeps the beach character intact on that flank and provides clear visual orientation when riding downwind. Facilities are solid: a kite school operates at IJmuiden for lessons and gear, and the beachfront offers Grand Café The Dutch Admirals, Paviljoen Noordzee, Strandpaviljoen Zeezicht, Zilt aan Zee, Bangkok aan Zee, ZanDiego Beach - Lokatie Zuid, Snackbar Evi, and several others for the post-session wind-down. The local kite community is well established, so setup zones and beach etiquette are understood by the people around you. This is an intermediate-to-advanced spot on a typical day. The combination of North Sea chop, real tidal current, and the hard boundaries at the canal mouth means it rewards riders who arrive prepared.
