About Medemblik

Medemblik sits on the western shore of the IJsselmeer, the Netherlands' large freshwater lake formed when the Zuiderzee was dammed. The kite spot faces east, overlooking open water toward the far shore — classic Dutch lake territory, flat, open, and well-suited to a spot that has developed one of the more active kite communities on the IJsselmeer. Getting there is simple. Parking is available near the De Grote Vliet bus stop in town, and the beach is a short walk from there. The launch area stands out for what's not there: no trees, no obstacles anywhere near the kite zone. You can rig and launch without worrying about line-snagging hazards, and the open shoreline gives you space to size up conditions before committing. The water earns this spot its reputation. It's shallow for a real distance from the beach — you can walk out roughly 150 metres before the depth increases meaningfully — which provides a useful margin for recovery during water starts or early-session gear issues. The shallows also make it practical to sort out equipment without depth underfoot. Further out, the surface stays flat. The IJsselmeer produces no significant wave action, making this smooth-water territory: good for freestyle, good for beginners building confidence in forgiving conditions. Sandy bottom throughout. Wind behaviour depends on direction. SW through NW flow delivers cross-onshore conditions on this east-facing shore — that's the session window you're looking for. When the angle is right, the combination of consistent lake flow and flat water makes for clean, open riding with room to work. As the wind tracks toward W-NW, it can start to shade offshore. Stay conscious of your downwind position and the kite zone boundary near the marina. The Regattacentrum is a significant marina complex, and sailing traffic is a real and ongoing presence on the water — give boats right of way and learn the sailing lanes before you set off. One date worth knowing: kitesurfing at Medemblik is permitted only from 1 April through 30 September. The spot closes from October to March — verify the calendar before travelling. When you come in, the town makes it easy to decompress. Brasserie MED and De Driemaster cover the sit-down meal end of things; Eetcafé De Kwikkel and Costas Portugees Restaurant offer alternatives. For something to drink, Café Brakeboer, Café het Zeepaardje, De Brouwerij Medemblik, Eetcafé de Babbelaar, and Feestcafé 't Kraaienest are all within reach. Medemblik has been a working sailing and water sports town long enough that the post-session infrastructure is solid.
