About Scheveningen

Scheveningen is The Hague's North Sea beach, a long sweep of sand that's been one of the Netherlands' most recognisable kitesurf spots for years. It sits at the edge of a busy coastal city — the esplanade and lighthouse are right behind you, the pier cuts through the beach, and the harbour lies to the south. This is urban kitesurfing with a genuine North Sea edge. The kite area is north of the pier. That location is non-negotiable: the pier is a substantial structure extending well into the sea, and together with the harbour it creates two fixed obstacles that define the riding boundary before you even look at the water. Get your spatial awareness locked in during the walk-on — where the pier ends, where the harbour entrance is, and where the swim zones begin. In summer this beach fills with swimmers, beachgoers and paddlers, and the flagged zones need to be treated as hard lines. The beach itself is long and sandy, giving you room to rig and a reasonable run-up at launch. The shore break is punchy, though — this is the open North Sea, not a sheltered lagoon. Conditions lean toward wave riding rather than flat-water freestyle, and launch and landing take more attention because of it. The prevailing wind window runs from south-southwest (190°) through west to north-northwest (350°), covering the dominant SW through NW directions that characterise this coastline. When that window is open and conditions are good, Scheveningen delivers. The complexity here earns it an intermediate-to-advanced rating. It's not the spot to dial in your water starts — the navigation demands, the shore break, and the summer crowds all stack up. For experienced riders comfortable in wave conditions and tight environments, it's a rewarding session in a spot that's hard to find anywhere else this close to a major city. On the water, expect honest North Sea conditions: variable, occasionally powerful, with chop that builds quickly when the wind fills in from the west. The spot rewards riders who can read shifting conditions and handle a lively launch. Facilities on the beach are solid. Aloha surf is the local kite school for coaching or gear. For food and drinks there's Café de Jutter, 't Wapen van Scheveningen, Café Groningen, Bagels & Beans, Callao, Capriccio, and Chefsbar Seinpost all within reach. If you need a bed, Badhotel Scheveningen and City Hotel Scheveningen are both close. The esplanade keeps everything accessible on foot once you're off the water.
