Kitesurfing Strand Horst / Wolderwijd

The spot is usable from spring through to autumn, roughly April to October. Summer months bring warmer water temperatures and more stable weather, making them popular with beginners. Spring and autumn can offer stronger and more consistent winds, which experienced riders tend to prefer.

It is widely regarded as one of the best beginner and intermediate spots in the Netherlands. The knee-to-hip-deep flat water across the entire kite zone makes it extremely forgiving. That said, more advanced riders also enjoy it for freestyle practice on the smooth water surface.

Westerly and southwesterly winds are the most common and tend to work well here, blowing across the open expanse of the Wolderwijd. Onshore or side-onshore directions generally produce the cleanest conditions at this inland lake location.

As an inland lake, the Wolderwijd can experience gusty or variable wind, so having a versatile mid-range kite is sensible. Many riders reach for something in the 9–12m range for typical summer conditions, but checking a forecast on the day and bringing a quiver option is always wise.

The trees lining parts of the beach can create wind shadow and turbulence close to shore, particularly in lighter conditions. It is worth observing the kite behaviour of others already on the water before launching. As a busy family beach in summer, be alert to swimmers and paddle boarders near the shore.

The spot is located near Horst in Gelderland, roughly an hour's drive from Amsterdam via the A6 or A28. There is a dedicated car park on site. Public transport options to the immediate beach are limited, so arriving by car is the most practical approach for kitesurfers carrying gear.

Access to the beach itself is free, but parking in the car park carries a fee. Payment is accepted by coin or PIN card, so it is worth having a bank card or loose change ready when you arrive.

Across the entire designated kite zone, the water stays consistently between knee and hip depth. This is one of the defining features of the spot and makes it unusually safe and accessible compared to many other Dutch kitesurf locations.
