About Workum

Workum sits on the eastern shore of the IJsselmeer — the Netherlands' vast enclosed freshwater lake — tucked into a corner of Friesland where the water stays flat and the bottom stays sandy for a long way out. It's a classic Dutch flatwater spot, and one of the more beginner-friendly on the lake. The beach at Workum is wide, with a clean sandy launch and shallow water that stretches out — you can wade a long way before you're out of your depth. That shallow bottom, which can extend up to 300 metres from the shore, makes this a forgiving place to sort yourself out before committing to a session. The usable wind arc runs from 190° through to 350° — south through northwest. What that means in practice: S and SW winds come in cross-onshore, giving you a safe window with the beach behind you. W and NW winds shift offshore, so if the forecast is blowing from that quarter, stay disciplined. Use a leash, ride with others, and stay inside the kitezone. The IJsselmeer has no wave action — unlike coastal spots — so the water surface stays flat regardless of wind strength. That's either a blessing or a limitation depending on your riding style. The lagoon is sheltered by natural sandbanks and sits between two protected natural areas. That geography keeps chop manageable and the water consistently shallow across the main kite zone. A long self-rescue walk on a sandy bottom beats a long swim — the extra wading depth is unusually reassuring compared to most spots. For skill level, this spot rewards beginners and freestyle riders. Flatwater, no waves, shallow bottom, and a cross-onshore S–SW window make it one of the better learning environments on the IJsselmeer. Body dragging, water starts, and first jumps all happen in a forgiving setting. Advanced riders chasing wave action or technical downwinders will find it limited — but for focused flatwater freestyle it can be excellent. Sky High kitesurf school operates on site, with instructors and rental gear available. The school's presence also means there's typically some structure on the water during busier sessions. After riding, Workum has a solid spread of options. Bistro Workum, De Gulden Leeuw, De Heeren Van Heeres, and Folkerts cover the restaurant side; De Smidte and el Cafetin work for a post-session drink. For staying overnight, Camping Sudersé, Berkenhof, and B&B Slapen in It Heidenskip are nearby accommodation options. One thing to set expectations: Workum is a freshwater lake spot with no tides, no salt, and no swell. If you want flat, consistent, beginner-friendly water in a quiet Frisian setting, it delivers. If you're chasing waves or a coastal vibe, look elsewhere.
