About Zuidlaardermeer
Zuidlaardermeer is a flat freshwater lake on the Groningen-Drenthe border, managed as an official NKV kitesurf spot and protected under Natura 2000 (Zuidlaardermeergebied, 2,087 ha). The kitesurfing area is located on the north shore, adjacent to Camping Meerwijck near Noordlaren, where a sandy beach provides a spacious launch with shallow water stretching well out into the lake. The safe wind window runs SE to W (roughly 135–270°) — south, southwest and southeast winds all produce onshore or cross-onshore conditions here. Southwest winds from the Dutch polder fetch are the most common and tend to be consistent; south winds give the longest run across the open lake. The water is flat and deep enough to stand in close to shore, making it a forgiving spot for all levels, though the wind can turn gusty on thermal afternoons. Kitesurfing is strictly confined to the designated area on the north side of the lake, as defined in the provincial access restriction decision (Provinciaal Blad 2023-3881). The southern portion and reed margins are off-limits year-round to protect breeding waterfowl and marsh habitats — the NKV spot manager (Bram Wilbrink) maintains the buoy marking system. Camping Meerwijck (Strandweg 2, Kropswolde) is directly on the kite beach and offers pitches, rental accommodation, a restaurant with lake views, an indoor pool and a marina. Free parking is available on site. The spot is open year-round; spring and early autumn typically offer the most consistent wind and fewer swimmers on the beach.
