Flat-water lagoon kite spot in Nouméa, New Caledonia, within the UNESCO World Heritage barrier reef lagoon. SE Trade Wind (Apr-Nov, 15-25 kts); École de Kitesurf Vakarm and Kitesurf Attitude operate here.
Nouméa Baie des Citrons sits in the capital of New Caledonia, a French overseas territory in the South Pacific roughly 1,500 kilometres east of Australia. The bay takes its name from the lemon trees that once lined the shore, and today it's the city's most animated beach strip — restaurants, bars, and the kite shop Kitesurf Attitude all within walking distance of the water. The real draw here is the lagoon. Nouméa lies inside the UNESCO World Heritage-listed barrier reef system, one of the largest coral lagoon complexes on the planet. That reef does the hard work: it absorbs South Pacific swell before it reaches the bay, leaving flat, manageable water that's forgiving for learners and fast for freeriders. Don't expect big ramps or chop — this is a glassy, urban flat-water session. Wind comes courtesy of the South-East Trade Winds, which blow reliably from April through November at 15–25 knots. That's your window. Outside that period the trades ease and conditions become less consistent, so plan your trip accordingly. The usable wind arc runs 225° through to 45°, covering the directions where the trades keep things workable across the bay. The launch is off the beach itself — Baie des Citrons is a proper sandy beach in an urban setting, so expect swimmers, sun-seekers, and the usual beach traffic, particularly on weekends. Launching here demands real situational awareness: walk your kite clear of people, communicate with beach users, and keep a leash on. Two schools operate here — École de Kitesurf Vakarm and Kitesurf Attitude — which means organised traffic and instruction runs alongside independent riders. Treat it as a shared space, because it is. For gear, the consistent trade wind and flat water make this a twin-tip-friendly spot. Freeriders can work the length of the bay freely, while newer riders benefit from the stable breeze and relatively forgiving water state. When the trades punch toward the top of their range, experienced riders can cover serious ground across the lagoon. After the session, the beachfront strip delivers. Kitesurf Attitude doubles as a shop, so equipment needs can be sorted without leaving the area. For food, Colette Le Bistrot, IndiKitch, and Le 142 cover the restaurant side. Post-session drinks flow at Couleur Café, Gym Bar, L'Endroit, L'imprévu, La Case, and Le Fronton Etchekhan Bar associatif — an unusually well-stocked stretch of beachfront for a kite spot anywhere in the Pacific. Nouméa is a French city with solid infrastructure; the bay is accessible from the city centre. New Caledonia uses CFP Franc, and while cards are accepted in many places, carrying cash avoids surprises at smaller spots. The UNESCO lagoon backdrop, reliable SE trades, and flat water make Baie des Citrons one of the more comfortable urban kite setups in the Pacific — particularly if you're pairing a kite trip with time in the city.
