This is not a manicured resort beach — it's exposed, wild, and sits squarely in the path of the Roaring Forties, the relentless westerly wind systems that sweep unobstructed across the Southern Ocean. That geography shapes everything about riding here. The beach faces west and southwest, putting it directly in line with the dominant SW-W winds that track through this corridor year-round. Expect wind from roughly south-southwest through to west, often running 20–45 knots and frequently pushing well beyond 30. This isn't a casual thermalling coastal spot — the Roaring Forties don't politely schedule themselves, and on many days the beach is simply overpowered for anything but committed riding. The usable kite window runs 150° to 300°, giving a solid side-to-side-onshore angle for the prevailing SW-W direction. The beach itself is flat, open sand — which is both its appeal and its demand. Long, uncluttered expanses mean you have room to work with if things go sideways, and the flat shore conditions suit riders who want to clock real distance on downwinders or work on freestyle fundamentals in predictable chop. But that openness also means there's little to soften the full force of a squall rolling in from the south. Wind can build fast and gust hard without terrain to filter it. Skill level is firmly intermediate to advanced. Not because the launch is technically difficult, but because the wind strength here is not forgiving. Under-gunned or under-skilled, a session at Oreti can turn into a survival exercise quickly. There are no listed facilities at the beach itself, so come fully prepared: fuel, food, a complete kit check, and a clear plan for where you're going before you launch. Wind is consistent year-round here, which means Oreti doesn't really have an off-season — just different flavours of demanding. Winter sessions will be cold, exposed, and raw; summer can be slightly more moderate but don't rely on it. Dress for the Southern Ocean regardless of the calendar.
