About Notodden

Notodden sits at the southern end of Heddalsvatnet, a large lake in the heart of Telemark, Norway. It's an inland kite spot — no salt, no swell, none of the coastal wind patterns that define most Norwegian kitesurfing — which makes it a different proposition entirely. What it offers instead is flatwater, a real working town on your doorstep, and an established kite school on site. The lake is the riding area. Heddalsvatnet stretches several kilometres north from town, giving enough fetch for a solid run when the wind cooperates. Lake thermals can develop on warmer summer days, and weather systems moving through the valley corridor can generate usable wind — though consistency is the one thing no inland Norwegian lake can guarantee. Come expecting variable conditions and you won't be caught off-guard. The kite school listed as Notodden is your first port of call when you arrive. They know the active launch zone, any hazards around the lake edge, and which conditions the spot handles well. With a school on the ground this is a properly established site, not just a stretch of shoreline that made it onto a map. Launch access is lake-edge in character. That typically means wet grass or gravel rather than a firm sandy beach. Oversized kites or sprawling setups become more of a nuisance here than on a wide beach — keep your gear tight. Run your safety check carefully; rescue response on a lake takes longer than at a staffed coastal spot. For gear, lake flatwater tends to reward a slightly bigger kite than the forecast alone suggests, because the smooth surface doesn't produce the gusty overpowered peaks of choppy coastal wind. Flat and fast favours a standard twin-tip; directional shapes are possible but you won't be using the full wave-riding repertoire. After a session, the town has solid options. Mersmak, My Pizza, Gatebar1, and Beijing House are your main meal choices; Eyde Bar & Restaurant is the pick for a proper sit-down with a drink. Cafe Felicia, Dany's Cafe, Bellman Kulturpub, and Monicas Kafé cover the coffee and lighter-bite end. This is a real Norwegian town with a kite spot attached, not a kite-scene beach resort — and if that trade suits you, Notodden delivers. Getting here from Oslo takes a couple of hours through Telemark. There's no coastal access, so plan the trip around a multi-day visit or combine it with other activities in the region.
