About Sola Beach (Solastranden)

Sola Beach — known locally as Solastranden — stretches for 2.3 kilometres along the Jæren coast of Rogaland, a flat, windswept shoreline facing west into the North Sea. This is one of Norway's most popular kitesurf spots, and sitting just 2 kilometres from Stavanger Airport makes it unusually easy to reach: fly in, grab your gear, and you can be on the sand in minutes. The beach itself is wide and sandy, backed by white dunes that give the whole place an open Nordic feel. The shore faces roughly west, and the usable wind arc runs from 190° to 350° — south-southwest through northwest — covering most of what the North Sea delivers. The water is flat and shallow, running out a long way before it deepens meaningfully. That shallow profile is a genuine asset: if something goes wrong you can typically stand up and sort yourself out without drama. Getting there from Stavanger is straightforward, with parking near the beach and a short walk to the water. One thing you must know before you rig up: launching is only permitted north of the Sola Strand Hotel. That boundary is there for a reason — respect it. Equally important is the bird-protection zone that runs from October 31 to March 1, during which kiting is banned outright. Plan your trip around this; showing up in November expecting a session is going to disappoint. Summer afternoons typically bring northwest winds in the 5–8 m/s range — light to moderate, well suited to bigger kites and intermediates looking to log long flat-water runs on clean ground swell. The Jæren coast gets its more serious days from the southwest, when Atlantic low-pressure systems push through in autumn and spring. Those sessions can be properly powered up and are better left to riders who are comfortable in challenging conditions. The North Sea water here is cold at any time of year, so a full wetsuit is non-negotiable regardless of how warm the air feels. The beach gets genuinely busy on good-wind summer weekends. Swimmers and other beach users are part of the picture, so launching with awareness of what's downwind of you matters. The long open sand gives plenty of room to manage a kite, but spatial awareness stays important throughout. On facilities, the Sola Strand Hotel sits right on the beach — a natural base. Clarion Hotel Air, Quality Airport Hotel Stavanger, and Scandic Stavanger Airport all cover accommodation nearby. For food, Kitchen & Table and Sirkus Renaa offer proper sit-down dining; Ritazza is close for a quick coffee before or after a session. Solastranden earns its reputation through a reliable combination of consistent North Sea wind exposure, a forgiving shallow bottom, and access that's hard to beat anywhere in Norway. Respect the launch boundary and the seasonal closure, and it's a spot that rewards every skill level that comes prepared.
