Marcilla Bay lies about 15 km east of Coron City in the Calamianes Islands, Palawan — one of those spots that demands a bit of planning to reach and then quietly rewards every bit of it. The bay faces northwest, framed by the jagged karst limestone towers that define Coron's landscape and appear in every photo taken from a boat here. There is no road in; you get here by banca (outrigger boat) from Coron town, and that short crossing is the beginning of the experience rather than a complication. The wind that drives everything is the northeast Amihan trade, blowing side-onshore through the bay from December to March at around 15–22 knots. The usable arc runs 225°–45°, a wide window that covers southwest through north. What makes the conditions particularly good is a natural rift at the bay entrance that cuts the swell before it reaches the riding area — the lagoon stays flat and calm even when the trade is properly pumping. The bottom is sandy, the water is shallow, and there is little chop to fight. These are conditions suited to building skills or riding fast without complications underfoot. 250K Kiteboarding runs an all-inclusive kite camp in the area, making Marcilla Bay genuinely accessible for instructed sessions and guided riding. If you're arriving independently, the banca transfer from Coron is something the local guesthouses can usually help arrange — worth sorting on a calm day when the channel between islands is settled rather than waiting until the wind is already on. Conditions suit intermediates well. The flat water and side-onshore angle remove a lot of variables, but the boat-access-only nature of the spot means any swim or self-rescue is more involved than at a beach you can drive to. Keep your leash in good shape, let someone on shore know your plan, and don't drift further than you're comfortable swimming back from in gear. Coron town is where you base yourself. None of it is beachside — Coron is the hub, Marcilla is where you ride. The Amihan season lines up with Palawan's drier months. December through March gives you the best odds of consistent wind and a manageable sea state for the boat crossing. Outside that window the wind becomes unreliable and the channel gets rougher. January and February are typically the heart of it.
