About Cabanas de Tavira

Cabanas de Tavira sits inside the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a protected coastal lagoon system running along Portugal's eastern Algarve. The kite spot itself is on a narrow sandbar island, and that shapes everything about getting here: a five-minute water taxi from Cabanas village is the only crossing. Pack your kit with that in mind — you're loading gear onto a small boat, so a compact, organised bag makes the crossing considerably less stressful. Once on the island, you have two genuinely different sessions available depending on which side of the sandbar you choose. The outer beach faces southeast into the Atlantic. When the Nortada blows — the north to north-northwest wind that drives summer kiting along this coast — it arrives offshore on this side, producing fast, clean conditions with a surface that ranges from flat to choppy depending on tide and wind strength. That offshore angle is the main thing to respect here: the open Atlantic is downwind, so ride with someone, keep the beach within range, and don't chase power on lighter days when drifting becomes a genuine issue. The inner lagoon side runs the opposite game. Sheltered from swell by the sandbar, the water sits flat and shallow — a forgiving spot for beginners working on water starts, or for anyone who wants to work on technique without chop pulling them around. The protection is real, though the lagoon is shallow in sections and it's worth knowing the depth before you start boosting. Wind here is thermal through the summer, driven by the heating of the Portuguese interior. The thermal window typically delivers 15 to 22 knots, building through the morning and peaking in the afternoon. Around 128 days per year see wind above 12 knots, which gives a solid basis for planning a trip. The usable kite window runs from roughly east through south to about southwest — a range that covers the predominant seasonal wind directions. For kite size, a 9 to 12 metre covers the majority of summer sessions. On slower days, lean toward the larger end; when the afternoon thermal fires properly, a 9m will be comfortable for most riders. Twin-tip is the default on the outer beach; if you are riding the lagoon, a directional makes good use of the flat water. Post-session, Cabanas village has solid options close to the ferry landing. Borda D'Agua Gastrobar and Bica both work well for food and a drink after a session. Cafe O Caracol and Cafe Pastelaria O Chico are close for coffee before the first crossing of the day.
